Project Photos: DIY Cat Bed Tutorial

Image
Azazel Today I'm going to show you how to sew a fabulous, reversible cat bed with 2 fat quarters and some fluffy poly-fil. You can really use any kind of stuffing that you like, this was just the biggest bag of fluff that my Walmart carries. (it doesn't take anywhere near that amount of filling, I plan on using it for many more projects) Bird Floral Dark Blue I used one fat quarter of Spoonflower's fleece and cut a rectangle of white faux fur from Joanne's to match. On the fleece, mark on all four corners a 4 inch x 4 inch square. I used a water soluble marker. Pin the corner so the edges of the square line up with right sides together,  and sew a seam along or just inside that line. Repeat for all four corners.  I went over it twice with the zigzag setting of my sewing machine. Then trim down the seam allowance and get rid of any marks that might bleed through to the other side. You should end up with a floppy shallow box ...

Project Photos: Malibu Satchel

Image
I got this neat little pattern from the Fabric Mutt blog for what she calls the Malibu Satchel . It's completely free and you don't have to download anything, as all the measurements for the pattern pieces and instructions are in the blog post. This is the bag that I made: It started out with my mom giving me a pretty maxi skirt that she no longer wears. The floral material is gorgeous but sheer with a separate solid black underlayer. They had to be used together as the main outer layer. The lining and accent fabric is the matte side of a navy satin, while the strap is a simple grosgrain ribbon. The back of the bag. You can see that I just stitched the straps onto the bag instead of using the detachable clips. The top carrying strap was omitted altogether. A cellphone pocket was also added onto the front of the bag under the flap to be easily accessable. Here you can see my old school flip phone trying to make the pocket a little more visible in thi...

Project Photos: Recovered Insoles

Image
This was a pretty straightforward project. I took out the insoles and traced them onto a piece of paper and added a 1/2 inch seam allowance all the way around to make a template. I cut out my fabric and basted it onto the insole being sure to keep the fabric tight enough to prevent any wrinkles or bunching that might make the shoes uncomfortable. Then I sewed all the way around the edge of the insole with the smallest stitch length on my machine to help keep the seam secure, and then inserted them into the shoes. (The bottom was still sticky enough that it didn't really need anything else to keep them in place.) How to: Small Wallet

Image
A simple wallet that's just big enough for cards and cash. Mine has my name embroidered on the outside! The main fabric is my  Chinese Paper Cut Dinosaur Red on Black It folds open to reveal pockets for holding cards. And it has the typical cash pocket. This one is lined with my  Garden Carpet Chevron Navy fabric. To start off  you need one of  Spoonflower's  8"x8" swatches of both lining and outer fabric with the white borders still attached. This is the step to embroider the outer fabric if you so choose. To finish the wallet, tuck the lining pocket into the outer shell and fold in half. The outside when opened. Close up on my name.
